Online safety for local political candidates and representatives

Choosing social media platforms

There are many social media platforms which provide different features, so it can feel somewhat overwhelming when deciding which one to choose. Our advice here would be to focus on a smaller number of platforms, or even just one platform, rather than attempting to create and run numerous accounts.

As the name suggests, social media encourage having conversations rather than broadcasting information to users. To that end, you need to be realistic about how you will monitor your professional social media account/s and report any issues.

It is better to choose one social media platform and to focus your attention on that than to try to cover various platforms and risk being overwhelmed or unable to keep up with messages.

It is best to consider and weigh up the different options. You cannot and should not be expected to have multiple accounts, unless you have a social media team to support you.

Your choice of platform can affect the interactions you may have due to the different features offered by the platform as well as different cultures that prevail on them. Among the things to consider here are the ways in which you can protect yourself when online.
